Definition Of True Friends

By Bonita Li

There is a proverb saying that "A friend in need is a friend indeed", meaning that a true friend is one who would offer help when you are in trouble. However, the phrase is sometimes misunderstood as "a person would become your friend if he/she needs help from you". So, what is really meant by a true friend?

Finding a true friend is not easy. A lot of people may bluff that they have a lot of friends, but how many of such "friends" would actually offer help when those people are in trouble?

The world is changing all the time; friends keep changing too. The people who still remain on your side, when you are physically, mentally and economically in trouble, are your true friends.

People usually have different groups of friends in different stages of their lives. For example, you got friends from primary school, from secondary school, from college and so on. It's normal for people to get new friends as they move to new places and forget the old ones.

People often lose contact with their old friends when they change school, switch job and so on. This happens because a lot of the people that you once had interaction with are not actually your "friends". They are simply people that are put at the same places with you because of work or shared responsibilities.

Sometimes we may make friends on purpose. For instance, we make friends on Internet because we are curious, and we chat with the opposite sex on the net because we want to have a partner. This kind of friendship is difficult to last long, though there are always exceptions. Only when we meet the people who share similar cultures, backgrounds or interests with us, can build up a long-lasting friendship.

True friends always concede and help each other. They are even willing to sacrifice for you. If you are demanding to your friends and you want them to agree with you on everything, you need to change your attitude. We should never expect too much of our friends and become dependent on them.

Friendship is something like love. A true friend will love you and view you as a very important person in the world. Nevertheless, this is a world full of materialism. So judge before making a friend. You need to be very lucky to find a true one. - 29941
